Transforming a classic Coach bag into a chic fanny pack. Wearing a white dress after Labor Day. Making a Marc Jacobs silk scarf work as a headband. These looks from eclectic San Francisco-based blogger Laura Ellner of On the Racks (www.ontheracks.com) may be why this fashion force has gained a following in the blogosphere.
Started in January 2010, Ellner’s blog has been racking up chic points with every post — and readers along the way, drawing over 2,000 Likes on Facebook. “I really enjoyed it from the start, and it has been a fun journey developing my blog ever since,” she said.
Earlier last month, Ellner attended New York Fashion Week for the Spring 2012 shows, among them Lela Rose and Tibi. “Lela Rose was a lot more youthful and playful that I was expecting, and I thought it was great. Tibi was surprisingly all solid colors — pretty mint green was my favorite — no prints. Lots of flowy dresses and cool jumpsuits. That was definitely my favorite show,” she said. “I love any excuse to go to New York. We stayed right across the street from Lincoln Center, so it was really fun to be in the thick of it all! ” Back in San Francisco, however, Ellner believes the local fashion is entirely unique. “There is a definite laid-back, cool vibe to SF style — people dress how they want! I like that,” she said. Ellner, a definite presence in the local fashion scene, proves that creating stylish outfits don’t necessarily cost a small fortune. “You can have great style on a tight budget. Combining vintage or thrifted finds with affordable items from Forever 21 or H&M is what I was all about in college,” she said. “I like to combine different styles and incorporate affordable and vintage pieces with an occasional designer splurge.” Alexander Wang, one of Ellner’s favorite designers, makes frequent appearances on her blog.
For those of you who daily stand sifting through your wardrobe, unable to come up with an outfit, Ellner proposes a solution. “I usually start with one piece that I am excited to wear — a new pair of pants or something like that. Then I will build a look based on that piece,” she said.
The SoCal native also makes a point to always be armed for San Francisco’s unpredictable weather. “I always do a lot of layering,” she said. “I never leave home without a sweater or scarf, no matter how nice it is outside.” When she is not blogging, Ellner works in Marketing for Shop It To Me (www.shopittome.com), a free web-based personal shopping service that alerts users when items from over 700 brands that match their preference go on sale.
Ellner has been featured in the likes of Glamor, Elle, TeenVogue, Refinery29, and The Cut.
